District Accepting Distinguished Service Award Nominations

In an effort to recognize members of the district’s support staff, the Board of Education established the Distinguished Service Award in 2002. Nominations for the 2013 Distinguished Service Award are being accepted from June 1 through July 1, 2013.

Good Morning,

It is my honor to let you know that at last night’s Special Board Meeting, MPS Board of Education members voted unanimously to select Mr. Michael Sharrow to be our finalist for the position of Superintendent of Midland Public Schools.

Going into the evening, we had two very capable, professional candidates, Dr. Wayne Anderson from Mt. Horeb, Wisconsin, and Mr. Sharrow, from Algonac, Michigan. After two extensive interviews with these very accomplished educators, Board members felt we had two very qualified candidates from which to choose.

Following last night’s deliberation where Board members discussed both candidates’ interview responses as well as their professional qualifications, accomplishments and references the Board felt Mr. Sharrow would be the right person to lead Midland Public Schools into the future.

2013 Gerstacker Proficiency Awards Presented

Four Midland Public Schools teachers were honored on Thursday, May 9, with the 58th Annual Gerstacker Teacher Proficiency Awards held at the Griswold Lecture Hall at Northwood University.

The awards “recognize contributions by exemplary teachers beyond the ordinary level of professional performance,” and are made possible by the support of the Carl and Esther Gerstacker Donor-Advised Community Foundation. The winners receive a cash award to be used for travel, continuing education, research in education or other appropriate purposes, along with an engraved permanent testimonial.

We would like to congratulate this year’s recipients: Wendy LaCourt, Ellen Flegenheimer-Riggle, Linda Murray, and Kathy Romain.

Superintendent Search Begins

Dear District Staff, Parents and Community Members:

Our Board has contracted with School Exec Connect, an educational search firm, to assist us in finding our new superintendent. Mr. David Peterson, Dr. Carol Klenow and Mr. Larry Lobert will serve as our advisors to assist us with this search. The consultants are familiar with our community and have conducted searches throughout the country.

We are interested in receiving your input about the qualities, experiences and demonstrated behaviors you think best in a new superintendent. We would appreciate it if you would take about ten minutes to complete an online survey to share your thoughts with us regarding the search. Responses will be accepted through Wednesday, April 10. 39th Annual Midland Area Snow Sculpture Competition

The 39th Annual Midland Area Snow Sculpture Competition was held Thursday, February 14 2013 at the Farmers Market in downtown Midland.

Teams from area middle schools and high schools worked with snow heaps prepared by the City of Midland. The H Hotel provided a warming area with hot chocolate for students and the Midland Area Foundation provided funds to purchase trophies.

Herbert Henry Dow High School and Midland High School are soliciting nominations at their prospective schools for the 2013 Recipient of their Saginaw Valley Teacher of the Year Award. The Saginaw Valley League established an award to recognize excellence in teaching. This award is presented annually to one teacher from each of the Saginaw Valley member high schools.
